The DieHard HunterThe diehard hunter knows the West Elk Wilderness is prime big game country, and is considered by many to be one of the best hunting areas in the lower forty-eight states. This spectacular country consisting of rugged mountains, thick pine forest, stands of aspen, and open parks and meadows is home to an abundance of mule deer, bear, bighorn sheep, Shiras Moose, and one of the largest resident elk herds in the state. Tenderfoot Outfitters has been providing horseback hunting trips into the Gunnison National Forest and West Elk Wilderness for over 30 years. We take great pride in our image and the quality of service we provide and believe it is the finest available. It is evident everywhere you look, from our deluxe camping equipment to our quality horses and tack; from delicious and hearty home cooked meals to our outstanding experienced guides. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff provides personalized attention to every guest and has a sincere interest in your comfort and success. We are bonded and insured and operate under state outfitter license #2339.

Elk Hunts in the West Elk WildernessThese backcountry hunts take place at high altitudes, 10,000 feet plus, and if you’re not prepared physically and mentally it can be the seven toughest days of your life.

You must be able to ride and control a horse with confidence not only in the daylight but in the dark as well, be able to mount and dismount your horse despite changing ground conditions, and be prepared to ride for extended periods of time, occasionally on rough trails through rougher terrain. For your safety and the well being of our horses we have set a physical weight limit of 240 pounds.

Deer Hunts with Tenderfoot OutfittersYou must be in sufficient physical condition to hike through changing terrain for extended distances and periods of time. You will encounter severe ascents and descents, rocky conditions, water crossings, and down timber through rugged mountainous country. Your physical and mental condition will be its’ best at the beginning of your hunt and as time progresses will likely start to deteriorate due to lack of rest, fatigue, and the affects of altitude. Everyone wants to call it quits at some point, but be prepared to hunt hard for 5-days.

You can recover from a tough hunt, you can’t recover from quitting.
Cameron Hanes

You must come prepared for unpredictable weather conditions and temperature extremes that can change in an instant. You may have to huddle under a tree or rock overhang for an extended period of time during a sudden rain, hail, or snow storm. It’s imperative that you stay dry and warm to avoid hyperthermia, so rain gear, extra gloves, and hand warmers in your pack are a must.
