| Over 25 million years ago during an explosive volcanic eruption the West Elk Mountains, consisting largely of volcanic fragments embedded in course volcanic ashes, were formed. Through the years the erosive forces of wind, rain, and snow has carved these volcanic ridge lines into spires and buttresses, leaving behind the more resistant rock layers as isolated castle towers which stand guard over the wilderness valleys.
 In 1964 the U.S. Wilderness Act designated the West Elks as one of Colorado’s five original wilderness areas. The fifth largest in the state, the West Elk Wilderness encompasses more than 176,000 acres, ranging in elevation from the 7,500 foot sage brush covered foothills, to the 13,085 foot alpine summit of West Elk Peak. The main focal
point of this spectacular area is the extraordinary turrets and pinnacles of the Castles, the stunning 12,079 foot rock formation jutting from the floor of the Valley of the Castles. In days past, any activity in this back country was done by packers and strings of horses or mules which was the only way to access this remote location. Today, though things have changed a great deal, the horse and reliable pack string is still the only way to transport campers, nature lovers, fishermen, hunters, and their gear into this secluded wilderness area.
